Kansas City Corporate Challenge: A Success From Start to Finish

By Intouch Team | Category: Intouch Culture |

More than 30,000 people participated in this year’s Kansas City Corporate Challenge (KCCC), and although Intouchers made up only a small percentage of those thousands, the 117 who participated put on their best game faces to represent Intouch’s work hard/play hard spirit.

Kansas City Corporate Challenge is an annual, citywide event that encourages friendly competition among Kansas City-area companies and also benefits the Special Olympics. Including the season-ending tug-of-war, there were 29 events this year, and Intouch participated in nearly all of them.

From the kick-off tailgate at Arrowhead Stadium to dressing up for Spirit Week to the closing ice cream social/prize giveaway, KCCC provided a great opportunity for Intouchers to work together and play together with folks they might normally only pass on the way to a meeting. Ed Johnson, who competed in the swimming events, said he got involved to meet new people.

“My biggest takeaway,” said Ed, “was seeing and experiencing the camaraderie among the committee and the staff participating in various competitions.”

This was Intouch’s fourth year participating in KCCC and its second year in Division D (divisions are based on the number of employees a company has). Out of the 24 teams in our division, we placed fifth overall with 463.5 points — 60 points more than last year — and came back with 32 medals! Here are a few other highlights:

  • Week 1: Megan Huey and Jenna Paige take silver in disc golf.
  • Week 2: CEO Faruk Capan joins 20 other Intouchers to participate in the 5K.
  • Week 4: Angelike Gaunt earns big points in racquetball, finishing first and earning Intouch our first gold of the season.
  • Week 6: Erin Mohr and Tara Stewart take silver in table tennis.
  • Week 7: The women’s soccer team brings home the gold after three years of taking silver!
  • Week 8: MORE GOLD. Claudia Smith places first and takes gold for weightlifting, while Carlos Acosta and Laura Sanderson take gold for mixed-doubles tennis.
  • Week 9: Swimmers Thomas Finley, Sam Hassler, Ed Johnson, Shauna Lawrence, Jessica Reinhardt and Chris Sauer take first place within our division.
  • Week 10: Intouch — including Faruk on the rope — takes bronze in the tug-of-war and closes the season with mimosas and donuts.

Shauna Lawrence, who tied with Angelica Marotta for female participation in the most events (seven!), also got involved to meet new people.

“It was an overall awesome experience,” Shauna said. “Everyone should participate.”

Angelica, whose favorite event was the tug-of-war, sums it up perfectly. “Corporate Challenge is a blast,” she said. “I’m already counting down the days till next year!”

Congratulations to all the participants, and thank you for making Intouch such a formidable contender in the 2015 KCCC!
