Last week in Berlin, I attended the Frontiers Health Conference. Intouch and our global partner Healthware co-hosted the event, which brought together digital health stakeholders including startups, investors, regulators and pharma companies including Novartis, Bayer, Menarini, Sanofi, Pfizer, Amgen and Roche to explore digital health innovations.
A main focus of the event was matchmaking between digital health startups and the VCs and companies with interest in partnering with them. I was impressed with the variety of innovative approaches that the startups represented — a true cutting-edge convergence of tech and health. For example:
- HeartWatch technology, which – using a standard camera – can remotely monitor blood flow just under the skin to detect sleep apnea, asthma, tachycardia and more
- Owlstone Medical’s breathalyzer, which detects things like cancer and infectious and inflammatory diseases
- HealthTunes, an evidence-based streaming audio service that “prescribes” music as medicine to improve physical and mental health
- SkinVision, AI-based software that detects melanoma by analyzing imagery taken by a smartphone camera
If you think there’s no place for technology as a treatment amid (and even instead of) traditional pills, think again. In fact, a new consortium, the Digital Therapeutics Alliance, was launched at the conference with the mission of bringing digital health into the mainstream.
