A Summer at Intouch: Katelyn Recalls Her Internship Experience

Katelyn Lesiak graduated from the University of Kansas in May 2014 with a degree in journalism and an emphasis in strategic communication. She first learned of Intouch Solutions in March 2014 at the KU Journalism Career Fair. Katelyn is now a full-time associate, but she’s excited to share her thoughts and experiences of what it was like as a 2014 summer intern.

Now that you’re a full-time Intouch associate, what is your title?
Account Administrator

What was your favorite internship experience?
It was really great getting to know the other interns and hanging out with them outside of the work environment. I always felt comfortable approaching another intern in a different department and asking about his/her role and what he/she did on a daily basis. Having that open communication helped me learn about Intouch much faster. Also, I really lucked out being on an account team that truly cared about my growth and made sure I was constantly learning. It was great knowing that these people had my back and wanted to see me succeed.

Tell us about your most memorable day as an intern.
It’s not so much a memorable day, but a memorable experience. When I first started my internship, my team had been working on a brand-new website for their drug. I was immediately introduced to the site and began helping prepare the regulatory review submissions alongside the account manager and account supervisor. The site officially launched after I became full-time, but I remember getting the all-company email and being so proud because I was part of that launch!

Give us five words that describe your internship experience.
Opportunity. Friendly. Busy. Excitement. Cake.  

What did you learn from your internship that you didn’t know before?
I came into the account services internship not knowing much about what it meant to be in account management. I learned about what the department does and how they facilitate relationships with the client, as well as the other departments at Intouch.

What surprised you the most during your internship?
It was surprising to learn how heavily regulated the industry is and how long it takes projects to launch — even if it’s just a simple email!

What advice do you have for future interns?
It’s important to take a lot of notes and be organized. You learn so many new things every day (every hour!) that it can be easy to forget. Think of ways to go above and beyond the task given to you, and, most importantly, NETWORK. Don’t be afraid to approach someone on a different team, or in a different department, to learn more about their role and who they are.
